Finding
a Vet using the Internet
The
Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has a comprehensive website
set up to help the general public find a suitable local veterinary
practice. This site is:
http://www.findavet.org.uk/
You are required to type
in the name of your nearest town or your postcode, (one or the other
will work, depending on where you live) and there is the facility
to tick a box below this - "Animals treated: exotics"
so that the search will only display vet practices who have indicated
to the RCVS that they are interested in treating exotics. NB. This
does not necessarily mean they specialise in them.
This web site also provides interesting information on veterinary
services in general, and you may be interested to follow the links
through the site. In particular it's possible to find out about referrals
and second opinions, and Recognised Specialists.
The Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, an
International group of vets who are particularly interested in herps,
publishes a list of its members. Their index includes the UK:
http://www.arav.org/WorldMembers.htm
Please
read their note regarding the fact that not all ARAV members
are veterinarians and not all veterinary members are in private practice.
Of
course, the internet is a great place to exchange opinions and ask fellow
hobbyists advice on which vet they would recommend. It's very important
to remember that these are personal opinions only, and the lists of
vets given here have all been submitted by someone, so these lists are
not "official" or complete...but there are several sites worth
browsing. Try:
The
Herp Vet Connection
Melissa Kaplan's
UK Herp Societies and Vets Listings.
Reptile
Allsorts.com's Vets Listings.
Can
I get Veterinary Advice on the Internet?
There is a vast amount of
general information on health care available on the internet...but
if, by "veterinary advice", you mean help from a vet
for your suffering pet...the short answer is - NO.
If your animal is ill, please don't waste time searching for
do-it-yourself cures, or e-mailing for information. Please don't
just paste a "Help!" request on a forum and wait to see
who answers. Please do take your pet to a qualified veterinary
surgeon as soon as you can.
There are very few veterinary surgeons who will answer your e-mail
enquiries. Remember that it is impossible to examine an animal
over the internet! A clinical examination is a pretty basic requirement
before any treatment can be offered...and anyway, no veterinary surgeon
in the UK can legally treat an animal that is not under his or her
care, ie., registered with his or her practice. One or two vets indicate
on their web-sites that they will answer general enquiries over the
internet, but it's unrealistic to expect a free consultation
by e-mail. Moreover, some of the vets offering this service are in
general small-animal practice and may not have specialist knowledge
of exotics.
The
following are UK Veterinary
Websites which may be of
interest.
These practices specifically mention their involvement in exotic animal
medicine on their websites.
NB. We are not, of course, in any position to recommend any of the
services these may offer- this is merely a site listing.
